Exploring the feelings behind the worldview theme--another project WORLDVIEW  theme song...

song for theme #13: Dancing With Systems

“Dancing With Systems” by Stephen P. Cook

to be sung to the tune of “Under the Boardwalk” by Arthur Resnick & Kenny Young / The Drifters

When you’re modeling something

Trying to give virtual life

Reduction analysis1

Cutting the whole with a knife

Dancing with systems

Model complexity

Writing computer code

Where I wanna be

Dancing with systems

Data jumping through hoops

Dancing with systems

Mapping feedback loops

Dancing with systems

Flowchart branching like trees

Dancing with systems

Emergent properties2

Dancing with systems, systems

Getting lower level function

Down pat is a must

So higher level output

Prediction you can trust3

Dancing with systems

Avoiding trash in, trash out

Testing, refining, learning

Giving models more clout

Dancing with systems

Data jumping through hoops

Dancing with systems

Mapping feedback loops

Dancing with systems

Flowchart branching like trees

Dancing with systems

Toward a future we see3

Dancing with systems, systems

Modeling social systems

For the good of the whole

Deep understanding

From synthesis, that’s our goal

Dancing with systems

Showing engineers care

Respecting human values

With algorithm4 not prayer

Dancing with systems

Data jumping through hoops

Dancing with systems

Mapping feedback loops

Dancing with systems

Flowchart branching like trees

Dancing with systems

Toward a future we see

Dancing with systems, systems

SONG—NOTES / COMMENTS

1—Refers to breaking something complex into smaller, more manageable parts, and studying those.  (The opposite of wholism.)

2—These can unexpectedly emerge —newly revealed—when higher levels of complexity are investigated.

3—In general, says Donella Meadows, “The future can’t be predicted, but it can be envisioned and brought lovingly into being.”

4— An algorithm is a problem solving procedure or method that is known to eventually give a solution.

Comment: This theme, unlike an engineering mentality that views society in terms of individuals acting like cogs in a machine, recognizes individuals have feelings.  It’s built on “dancing” not “rationally controlling.”
