Exploring the feelings behind the worldview theme--another project WORLDVIEW  theme song...

song for theme #7B: Magic

“Alter Consciousness” by Stephen P. Cook

to be sung to the tune of “The Camptown Races”1 by Stephen Foster

We count as children toss the ball

Fool us! Fool us!

We miss the gorilla’s curtain call2

Fool us your way!

Magicians use misdirection

Fool us! Fool us!

We buy into their illusion

Fool us your way!

Alter consciousness

Mind plays a new role

Was feeling aimless or hopeless

Now I’ve got some control

She sought the healer in her grief

Shaman!3 Shaman!

For her soul get pain relief

Watch Shaman play!

To spirit world he makes his plea

Shaman! Shaman!

He heals with ceremony

Watch Shaman play!

Alter consciousness

Mind plays a new role

Was feeling aimless or hopeless

Now I’ve got some control

With ritual he makes a curse

Vodoo!4 Vodoo!

His rival’s health soon be worse

Make Vodoo pay!

He sticks pins in a doll

Vodoo! Vodoo!

For his rival he plans a fall

Make Vodoo pay!

Alter consciousness

Mind plays a new role

Was feeling aimless or hopeless

Now I’ve got some control

Therapists use art to heal

Sand tray!5 Sand tray!

Imagined worlds can reveal

With sand tray play!

Closing left brain opens new door

Sand tray! Sand tray!

Your inner wisdom to explore

With sand tray play!

Alter consciousness

Mind plays a new role

Was feeling aimless or hopeless

Now I’ve got some control

SONG—NOTES / COMMENTS

1—This song was similarly used (as the basis for another song) in the plot of the book Work Song by Ivan Doig.

2—Refers to a famous video where a gorilla walks (unseen by many!) through a scene illustrating “inattention blindness.”

3— Shamans attempt to heal by restoring a person's balance with nature.  They believe in connectedness of all things and use

knowledge of the local environment, altered states of consciousness, rituals, magic, etc.

4—Voodoo refers to Haitian religion/magic or related Louisiana, USA folkways where practitioners placate and serve spirits.

5—Sandplay therapy is a way to use art done in sand trays to heal and resolve conflict.

Comment: the possibility of gaining control of an otherwise hopeless situation provides emotional armor.  A less productive use of this theme would be to engage in wishful thinking and not confront the reality of the situation you face. Such emotion-focused coping does nothing to get at the root cause of the stress.
