Brief Questionnaire to Assess Compatibility
With Worldview Theme #27

Respond to each of the following below on a 1 to 5 scale, where
     1= strongly disagree      2 = disagree      3 = neutral      4 = agree      5 = strongly agree
If you don’t have understand, or are confused by a particular question, select 3= neutral.

Note: An * in front of the question indicates that this has been used in national public opinion surveys.

1. I believe that humans are part of nature, not its rulers, and that people need wild places to explore, wild animals to encounter, and unspoiled natural beauty to gaze on, if for no other reason than it makes them feel part of the natural scheme of things.

2. Land, natural resources, and wildlife have value in their own right, without regard to their usefulness to people or human convenience / inconvenience considerations.

3. Human activities should not compromise the wholeness, unity and interdependence of the natural world ( to some “God’s precious creation”).

*4. People worry too much about human progress harming the environment.

*5. Human beings are the main cause of plant and animal species dying out.

*6. Natural environments that support scarce or endangered species should be left alone, no matter how great the economic benefits to your community from developing them commercially might be.

*7. If I had to pick sides, I’d side with those who say that “Humans should coexist with nature” rather than those who say that “Human beings should master nature”.

8. Sometimes when I’m at some special beautiful place in nature, I have the type of feeling that might be characterized by words like “in awe”, “sacred”, “holy” -- a feeling that some might get while in a magnificent cathedral.

*9. I have either attended a meeting or signed a letter or petition aimed at protecting the environment.

*10. If I were making up the budget for the federal government this year, I’d increase spending on environmental protection.

*11. I’d say that it is at least somewhat likely that the use of new types of plants and crops developed by genetic engineering will upset the balance of nature and damage the environment.

12. I love to work the soil, plant seeds, and watch them grow -- it gives me a feeling of “connectedness” with nature and living things.

*13. I worry about loss of natural habitat for wildlife.

*14. Global Warming is a serious problem.

*15. I live relatively close to nature in a rural rather than urban setting.
